In April 2026, social media was inundated with news stories featuring the use of the Bible in world politics. In one instance, the Bible was invoked to justify acts of war and in another the Bible was used to promote peace. Navigating both extremes is difficult; however, this is not the first time Christians have faced a similar challenge. In this lecture, we will examine the methods that empires or political powers adopt to employ the Bible as a weapon.
Dr. Macumber will give 2 lectures with a break in-between for coffee, tea and snacks. The evening will end with time for conversation and questions.
Dr. Macumber teaches courses predominantly in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. Her research interests include the intersection of the divine and earthly spheres, monstrous bodies, and biblical art. Her recent book Recovering the Monstrous in Revelation (Bloomsbury Academic) applies the interdisciplinary method of monster theory to John’s Apocalypse. She is Department Chair and Professor of Biblical Studies at Providence University College.
